‘Sports for Climate Action’ Olympic Day Walk-Run Kicks-off In Style

From Nan to 3 Provinces across Thailand

Nan Province officially kicked-off Olympic Day 2023 Walk-Run at Muang District, the first of 4 planned activities in 4 provinces throughout the year, organized under the collaboration between the National Olympic Committee of Thailand Under the Royal Patronage of His Majesty the King, Bangchak Corporation Public Company Limited, together with the public and private sectors in the provinces of Nan, Mukdahan, Chiang Mai, and Kanchanaburi. These Olympic Day 2023 Walk-Run activities are organized under the UN Sports for Climate Action principles, aiming to be environmentally friendly “Green Sport” events.

Recognizing the importance of good health and sports, Bangchak has supported the Olympic Day Walk-Run since 2018. As an organization committed to reducing carbon emissions from its group business operations and activities, Bangchak further extends its support in 2023 along the “Sports for Climate Action” initiative by offsetting participants’ carbon footprints with carbon credits via the Carbon Markets Club. The carbon footprint of over 4,000 participants of the Nan kick-off event, and other subsequent events, will be calculated and offset with carbon credits ensuring the events are “Carbon Neutral”.

At the event, Bangchak also raised Climate Action awareness through various activities, including,

  • Exhibition on Climate Action and Circular Economy through various Bangchak initiatives such as “Fry and Fly” (Tod Mai Ting) – Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) made from used cooking oil, “Cups for Saplings” – collecting Inthanin Bio-Cups for the Royal Forest Department.
  • Garbage management campaign collecting plastic bottles to be recycled into caps for the first 100 participants to pass the finish line in the remaining 3 events.
  • Distributing Cups for Saplings from the “Pun Suk Urban Greenery” campaign to promote the expansion of green spaces and help sequester carbon.

In addition to mini-marathons and fun-runs, the Olympic Day 2023 Walk-Run also organizes demonstrations of other sports for youngsters such as basketball, boxing and rock climbing, underlining the readiness of Thailand as the country proposed to the International Olympic Committee for hosting the 2030 Summer Youth Olympic in Chonburi province.

The remaining Olympic Day 2023 Walk-Run events will be held on 24 June in Mukdahan, 4 November in Chiang Mai, and 16 December in Kanchanaburi, to expand coverage of participation, promote tourism, and stimulate the economy, thereby generating income to the community, while preserving the local culture, as well as fostering public awareness on environmental conservation.

Bangchak’s support of the 4 Olympic Day events is in accordance with the Sports for Climate Action Framework

launched in 2018 by UN Climate Change, in collaboration with the International Olympic Committee (IOC), to engage sports organisations and their stakeholders to set the course for the sports world to address climate change through concrete commitments and partnerships at the international, regional, and national levels, and help drive the sports sector to achieve global targets for climate change.
