Stay for Santa Project

Igniting Greater Awareness for a Sustainable World among Travelers

Awareness of the importance of reducing carbon dioxide emissions in daily life or various activities, and taking action to "abate, avoid, and act" small behaviours that have become ingrained, can emerge as a powerful force for creating sustainable changes for the future.

The collaboration between Carbon Markets Club, Bangchak Group, and the Erawan Group aims to drive a low-carbon society in tourism activities under the "Stay for Santa" project. This initiative not only compensates for personal carbon footprints of hotel guests staying at four Erawan Group hotels namely Grand Hyatt Erawan Bangkok, JW Marriott Hotel Bangkok, Courtyard by Marriott Bangkok, and Mercure Sukhumvit 24 during the New Year festival from 23 December 2023 to 2 January 2024 for a period of 10 nights but also encourages travelers to be mindful of their environmental impact and participate in reducing carbon emissions during their stay and travel.

Throughout the project's duration, there has been communication to raise awareness among hotel guests through various media channels within the hotel, online platforms, and the Carbon Markets Club. The initiative invites everyone to adopt the " abate, avoid, and act" behaviour change, focusing on:

A small starting point, fueled by the commitment of the three partners who aspire to stimulate others to turn towards transformation, the project aims to help drive the planning and design of tourism activities focused on reducing carbon emissions on a larger scale.

Throughout the project's 10-night duration, Bangchak offset for the carbon emissions of hotel guests in the four participating hotels, totaling an estimated 330 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent, calculated based on Thailand Greenhouse Gas Organization’s estimates of a room night at a 5 stars hotel (two persons: 28 kgCO2 eq, one person: 14 kgCO2eq) and a 4 stars hotel (two persons: 18 kgCO2 eq, one person: 9 kgCO2eq), through Carbon Markets Club with TVERs carbon credits from BCPG Public Company Limited. This initiative promotes eco-friendly accommodation and contributes to building a sustainable world.

Though starting with a short-term project involving a specific group of tourists, Bangchak and partners aim to make this pioneering project a starting point for awareness and participation of businesses in the tourism industry, hoping to inspire the creation and promotion of activities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions more widely. Examples include designing travel plans that emphasize reducing carbon emissions, participating in activities that contribute to minimizing the environmental impact of accommodation and travel, and integrating sustainability into tourism through a shift from "value-based tourism" to "values-based tourism" or a form of tourism that allows future generations to travel to beautiful places, fulfill dreams, and find lasting happiness through travel experiences.

Low Carbon Travel

Travelling is about opening opportunities for experiences, discovering new aspects of the world, and providing travelers with a sense of beauty, uniqueness, and the delicacy of the world.

Reducing personal carbon footprints from travel does not have to be difficult or involve significant sacrifices. Everyone can find inspiration to participate in new activities, explore various places, enjoy diverse foods, and change behaviors to reduce waste in simple ways, such as:

These simple steps allow travelers to contribute to low-carbon practices without compromising the joy and fulfillment of their journeys.
