B24 Marine Biofuels by BSRC

Igniting the Future of Sustainable Shipping – Thailand’s First Mover

In April, the International Maritime Organisation’s (IMO) Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) announced the ambition to achieve Net Zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 from the global maritime sector. This milestone declaration has turned the spotlight toward clean energy solutions that meet the requisite environmental specifications, while also enhancing business competitiveness. Among these emerging solutions is B24 Marine Biofuels — a next generation marine fuel that significantly reduces emissions and is ready for industrial-scale deployment.

Mr. Anuwat Rungruangrattanagul Chief Executive Officer of Bangchak Sriracha Public Company Limited (BSRC)

In this edition of Bangchak Reflections, we are honoured to speak with Mr. Anuwat Rungruangrattanagul, Chief Executive Officer of Bangchak Sriracha Public Company Limited (BSRC). He shared valuable insights on the development of B24 Marine Biofuels, with BSRC pioneering as Thailand’s first producer and distributor, and how the Thai energy sector can pursue a truly sustainable path forward.

Clean Energy for the Future of Maritime Shipping

Mr. Anuwat explained that B24 Marine Biofuels is a marine fuel comprising 24% Used Cooking Oil Methyl Ester (UCOME) blended with 0.5%S Very Low Sulphur Fuel Oil (VLSFO). It is distinguished by its low-emissions profile and serves as a bio-based alternative that can directly replace fossil-derived marine fuels. By repurposing used cooking oil within a circular economy framework, BSRC not only helps reduce dependence on fossil fuels but also lowers greenhouse gas emissions from the very beginning of the production process.

Engineered for the Planet, Certified for Performance

BSRC’s B24 Marine Biofuels is the first marine fuel in Thailand to be certified under ISO 8217, the international standard for marine distillate fuels, ensuring safe use in ship engines without requiring any modifications to engine or existing fuel infrastructure. It also holds the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC EU), confirming its compliance with global sustainability standards and readiness for international markets.

“Our first customer was NYK Line, a leading global shipping company from Japan. Their trust in B24 Marine Biofuels reflects confidence in both the product’s quality and its commercial viability,” Mr. Anuwat shared.

Business-Ready, Future-Focused

Mr. Anuwat further explained that historically, most ocean-going vessels used heavy fuel oil due to its lower cost compared to diesel. However, fuel oil emits significantly more carbon dioxide than diesel. As the world confronts climate challenges, the shipping industry is being pushed to adopt cleaner energy solutions especially in Europe, where environmental regulations are increasingly stringent. B24 to B30 fuels present a highly practical, feasible, and cost-effective alternative—especially when compared to options like installing sulphur scrubbers or using specialised ultra- low-sulphur marine fuels.

BSRC: Driving Thai Energy Toward a Sustainable Vision

BSRC’s Bangchak Sriracha Refinery continues to develop fuel products that meet the needs of a wide range of marine vessels from High Sulphur Fuel Oil to Low Sulphur Fuel Oil to Marine Gas Oil. Today, the refinery leads with B24 Marine Biofuels and is also preparing for the future with plans to expand into B30 blends, which contain a higher proportion of bio-based content to further reduce greenhouse gas emissions and meet growing customer demand.

We believe the future of energy must be grounded with social and environmental responsibility. The development of B24 Marine Biofuels marks a significant step for BSRC in balancing commercial competitiveness with Bangchak Group’s commitment to delivering diverse products that address customer needs while reducing environmental impact in a truly sustainable way

Concurrently, Bangchak Group continues to advance its biofuel development to support diverse modes of transport - not just maritime, but also land and air. This includes B100 biodiesel for land transport and Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) from its Bangchak Phra Khanong Refinery, which is also capable of producing Renewable Diesel, or Green Diesel. These efforts underscore Bangchak’s strong commitment to delivering clean energy solutions that support sustainable mobility across land, sea, and air.
